Celebrating the NH Heritage Trail

2010-08-25

On August 25th, the final Bretzfelder Program celebrated the NH Heritage Trail in the North Country, specifically the Bethlehem to Lancaster segment. The NH Trails Bureau recently approved the extension of the Heritage Trail from the current terminus at Bretzfelder Park, down Prospect Street, across the bridge, up Hazen Road to Route 142 to Kimball Hill Road. Jennifer Codispoti who is project coordinator for the trail in the NH Trails Bureau came from Concord for the ribbon cutting and was joined by members of the Bretzfelder Park Memorial Committee, Bethlehem Conservation Commission and representatives of the Lancaster and Whitefield Heritage Trails. The program started with the ribbon cutting, proceeded to a short walk on the trail within Bretzfelder Park and then to the Pavilion for a review of Heritage Trail history. Photos are posted.

Amending or Terminating Conservation Easements

2010-08-24

The publication "Amending or Terminating Conservation Easements" was published by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. The booklet is designed to help better understand the circumstances under which a conservation easement might be amended. An online version is available at no charge at http://clca.forestsociety.org/publications by clicking on "Amending or Terminating Conservation Easements."

Link to Aries Engineering Report on NCES Landfill

2010-02-25

Here is the link to the Town Engineer's (Aries Engineering, Inc.) comments on a Correction Action Plan concerning the North Country Environmental Services (NCES) landfill site in Bethlehem: http://www2.des.state.nh.us/IISProxy/IISProxy.dll?ContentId=4220485 The report can also be found under the Documents section of this page. Some relevant comments from the report: "Based on the July and November 2009 ground water data, it is Aries' opinion that observed groundwater bromide concentration trends are consistent with a persistent, long-term bromide concentration signature and, therefore, consistent with an on-going bromide source which potentially includes leaks from the landfill liner system, repeated discharges from the site leachate management system, an as yet undetermined release mechanism, or a combinationi of these leachate release mechanisms." AND REGARDING THE CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN: "The CAP provided opinions and hypotheses regarding groundwater contaminant sources. However, site remedial work is not yet complete and site data have not yet demonstrated that landfill remedial actions have identified and effectively addressed all potential ground contaminant sources. The effectiveness of landfill remedial action will only become apparent as additional monitoring data are collected and analyzed. Monitoring data would have to be collected over a one or two year period after landfill remedial actions are completed, before remedial effectiveness conclusions can be confidently drawn."
